From whichever side you approach Schiermonnikoog, the horizon is dominated by two lighthouses, one red and one white. You won´t find this on any other island. Both lighthouses were built in 1854. In 1910, the white (southern) tower becomes redundant because the red one gets a mechanical, rotating light.
